Zone 3 Training

Zone 3 training is moderate-hard cardio that builds endurance but can crowd recovery if it dominates the week instead of true easy and hard days.

Zone 3 training is moderate-hard aerobic work—often roughly seventy to eighty percent of max heart rate—where conversation needs broken sentences. It builds muscular endurance and cardiac stroke volume but can become a gray zone if most weekly volume lands here instead of easier zone 2 or harder intervals.

Polarized plans limit zone 3 to targeted blocks.

Common questions

  • Is zone 3 training junk mileage?

Not junk—it's productive when dosed. Problems appear when almost every run or ride sits in zone 3, leaving no easy recovery or sharp top-end stimulus.
