Time Under Tension
Time under tension is how long muscles stay loaded in a set—controlled tempos can aid hypertrophy on accessories but should not replace load on main lifts.
Time under tension (TUT) is total seconds a muscle spends under load during a set—controlled eccentrics and pauses increase TUT without adding weight. Moderate TUT can support hypertrophy on accessories; chasing sixty-second sets on compounds often limits load and strength gains.
Use two-to-four second lowers on isolation work; keep heavy sets efficient.
Common questions
-
Does longer time under tension always build more muscle?
Only if effort and proximity to failure stay high. Ultra-slow sets with light weights often under-stimulate compared with moderate tempo and heavier loads.
