Straight Leg Raise ACL Rehab

Straight leg raise ACL rehab builds quad control with the knee straight—an early open-chain drill used when form and extension are adequate.

Straight leg raise ACL rehab lifts the entire leg with the knee locked straight—training quad and hip flexor control without bending the knee. Early versions avoid lagging extension behind the table; inability to lift without bending signals quad shutdown needing quad sets and swelling control first.

Add ankle weights only when form stays perfect. Supine and side-lying variations build hip stability for later single-leg work.

Common questions

  • Why can’t you lift the leg after ACL surgery?

Quad inhibition and pain—not always structural damage—often cause inability to straight leg raise. Quad sets, swelling control, and NMES when prescribed usually precede successful raises.
