Pre-Meal Hunger Check

A pre-meal hunger check pauses before eating to separate true fuel need from clock, habit, or stress—core practice for mindful and intuitive eating.

A pre-meal hunger check is a ten-second pause—rate stomach emptiness, energy, and whether food is needed now versus habit or clock alone. Scores of one to three on a ten-point scale often mean true fuel need; eating at five because it is noon is schedule-driven, not cue-driven.

Athletes may pre-fuel hard sessions even when cues are quiet—performance still rules.

Common questions

  • Should you skip meals if hunger is low on the scale?

If you are above comfortable fullness and energy is fine, a lighter meal or short delay is reasonable. Do not skip scheduled fuel before long training blocks—performance hunger differs from boredom.
