Power Meter Training

Power meter training uses wattage from pedals or cranks to pace intervals and track fitness without wind or hills distorting speed.

Power meter training uses real-time wattage from pedal-based, crank-based, or hub-based meters to pace efforts and measure fitness. Power is more stable than speed on windy or hilly roads, so intervals hit the intended stimulus.

Pair power with heart rate and RPE to spot aerobic decoupling and fatigue. Calibrate zero offset before hard sessions.

Common questions

  • Do I need a power meter to train well?

No—heart rate and RPE work for many athletes—but power removes guesswork on variable courses and makes indoor and outdoor efforts comparable.

  • Where should a power meter live?

Pedal and crank systems are common; hub meters are simple on one wheel. Consistency matters more than brand—use the same meter for trends.
