Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test)

The classic progressive shuttle (beep test) that estimates aerobic fitness until exhaustion. Retest under consistent conditions for fair comparison.

The multistage fitness test—often called the beep test—is a progressive shuttle run to increasing cadence until exhaustion, estimating maximal aerobic capacity in schools and team sports. Level reached correlates with VO₂ max estimates but is noisy day to day.

Warm up fully; retest under similar conditions.

Common questions

  • Is the beep test the same as VO₂ max lab testing?

It estimates aerobic capacity in the field but has more day-to-day noise than lab tests. Use it for trends, not absolute precision.
