Marathon Training

Marathon training builds weekly mileage, long runs, and recovery over 12–20 weeks so you can finish 26.2 miles strong. Aerobic durability, fueling practice, and sleep matter more than peak speed.

Marathon training is a structured build of weekly mileage, long runs, tempo work, and recovery so you can cover 26. 2 miles without collapsing in the final miles.

Most plans span 12–20 weeks with gradual volume increases and a taper before race day. Speed matters less than durability: aerobic base, fueling practice, and sleep consistency predict finish quality.

Common questions

  • How long should a first marathon training block be?

Most beginners need 16–20 weeks with a solid walking or running base already. Extend the plan if weekly mileage jumps feel unsustainable or sleep and HRV trend down for two weeks.

  • How many days per week should you run?

Four to five run days plus one to two strength or mobility sessions is common. Keep at least one full rest day and one very easy day to absorb long-run stress.
