FODMAP Elimination Phase

The FODMAP elimination phase short-term cuts fermentable carbs to calm IBS—paired with planned reintroduction, not endless restriction for athletes.

The FODMAP elimination phase temporarily removes fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols—onions, wheat, many beans, and some fruits—to calm IBS symptoms for two to six weeks. It is a diagnostic tool, not a permanent athlete diet.

Energy and fiber still need substitutes from low-FODMAP plants.

Common questions

  • How long should FODMAP elimination last?

Typically two to six weeks under clinician or dietitian guidance, then structured reintroduction. Longer elimination risks fiber deficiency and unnecessary food fear.
