Contrast Training

Contrast training alternates heavy strength lifts with similar explosive drills to boost power via post-activation potentiation when fresh.

Contrast training pairs a heavy strength movement with a biomechanically similar explosive drill—squat then jump, bench then med-ball throw—to leverage post-activation potentiation. Rest between pairings matters; rushed contrasts become junk volume.

Use sparingly when fresh.

Common questions

  • Who should avoid contrast training?

Athletes with joint pain, poor landing mechanics, or high fatigue should master basics first. Contrast work is advanced and session-limited.
