Catch-Up Freestyle Drill
Catch-up freestyle drill pauses one arm forward until the other hand arrives—training front-quadrant timing and patient catch setup without rushing the pull.
Catch-up freestyle drill pauses one arm forward until the other hand reaches it—gliding on the long side to emphasize front-quadrant timing and patient catch setup. It slows stroke rate and exposes over-spinning hips or rushed pulls.
Use short repeats with full attention; mindless catch-up ingrains pauses that do not exist in racing. Progress to three-quarter catch-up, then full stroke with the same front-quadrant feel.
Breathe bilaterally to keep alignment honest.
Common questions
-
Should catch-up drill be used every warm-up?
A few short lengths help cue timing; daily long catch-up can over-glide. Blend with full-stroke 50s so race rhythm stays natural.
