Athletic cold immersion uses brief submersion in cool water to reduce soreness and perceived fatigue. Timing matters because frequent post-lift ice may blunt strength adaptations for some athletes.
Cold water immersion (CWI) is full or partial submersion in water roughly 10–15°C (50–59°F) for brief periods to blunt soreness and perceived fatigue after hard sessions. Research is mixed on strength adaptations—frequent ice right after hypertrophy work may blunt gains for some lifters.

Studies often use 10–15°C for 10–15 minutes, but colder is not always better. Start milder, shorten duration, and prioritize safety and breathing control.

Should you ice bath after every lift?
Not if maximal strength and muscle growth are the priority—frequent immediate CWI may blunt adaptations. Save ice for high soreness, multi-day events, or recovery-focused weeks.
