Alpha-Galactosidase (Beano) Basics

Alpha-galactosidase (Beano) breaks some bean sugars at the meal—useful for occasional legume gas, not a substitute for slow fiber ramps or FODMAP guidance.

Alpha-galactosidase—sold as Beano and similar products—breaks down some GOS carbohydrates in beans and crucifers before colonic bacteria ferment them into gas. Take with the first bite of a legume-heavy meal; it is a symptom tool, not permission to skip gradual fiber ramps.

Effects vary by dose and meal size; it does not fix fructan onions or lactose ice cream. People with rare galactosemia must avoid these enzymes—ask your clinician.

Common questions

  • Can you take Beano every day?

Some people do with large legume diets, but fixing portion ramps and soaking usually comes first. Daily enzyme use should follow label directions and clinician advice if symptoms persist.
